Use “Yet” instead
The message of “yet” is a message of hope and opportunity. During my childhood, I developed in an environment based on “pass” or “fail” standards. This course shows the type of focus we must have with our students, especially when applying a blended learning model. I agree with Carol Dweck; this lack of growth mindset can be devastating for a child or a person at any point in their life.
Adopting a growth mindset will encourage our students and ourselves to keep learning. Feedback is so essential, especially when we are looking for improvement. Still, in the case of “yet,” it becomes an encouragement to strive for level performance never achieved before.
The Growth Mindset can be an excellent component for benchmarks and common assessments. Students want to know whether they fail or pass and immediately create preconceptions about themselves. Using a Growth Mindset before any evaluation can make a difference in their success. We must praise people for their process- strategies, hard work, focus, and perseverance rather than talent and intelligence (Dweck, 2014). I will look for more videos and examples and the information in the Mindset book by Carol Dweck.
While reviewing the graphic to compare and contrast the Fixed Mindset to the Growth Mindset, I noticed how often people with a fixed mindset would not learn from their mistakes and avoid the challenge. I also noticed how many people in my organization have a fixed mindset. No matter how we present something, they will not even try, and also speaks about the type of culture we are creating as a Leadership team for not developing a Growth Mindset environment. Our feedback must be based on the progress and not on the results (Briceno, 2012)
