Houston, We have a Problem

Over the past years, Texas has been one of the states facing many issues with the weather. This year we got a Freeze, but the kind that you don’t want to have.

Back in South America in the 1980s, ’90s, and 00’s I used to dream about the snow in the US (I wanted the kind where you can go and play outside but then come back into a warm environment). Still, I never thought that I would be sleeping surrounded by it, especially if my residence was going to be Texas. I don’t believe there was enough communication about things we should be prepared for during the freeze. Talking about under communicating, right? There were many things that I could have done if the information would’ve come proactively. I knew the cold was coming towards Houston, but I wasn’t prepared. Most of the information to prepare for this event came 48 hours before February 15, 2021. Perhaps I’m living under a rock, but I was not the only one who got seriously hit with this weather. There were millions of people in distress, not just because of electricity, as they were the means to keep you warm if you would have been prepared. In this case, nothing could have been done to prevent the electricity outage as the grid was not prepared. Still, contingency plans were not in place either, and people were not adequately educated for this type of scenario. I suspect next year, people will learn from this experience, and communication will become more effective/consistent. When it comes to life or death under communication is not the way to go.
